Mrs. Smith: I am getting worried about my health, Mr. Connor. I’ve put on weight recently and I don’t know what to do about it.

Mr. Connor: If you want to lose weight and to preserve health, it’s better to begin with smaller portions of food and to make changes to your diet. For example, replace a cup of tea and cake with a glass of juice. Avoid fast food, and fried and fatty food because it contains a lot of cholesterol. Cholesterol is very dangerous. It causes the production of a fatty plaque that clogs the arteries, which can lead to a heart attack or a stroke. In order to prevent the danger you should reduce the amount of cholesterol rich food such as eggs and offal.

Mrs. Smith: And how many calories a day do I need?

Mr. Connor: A person needs 2,000 calories a day, but it depends on age, weight, physical activity and other factors.

Mrs. Smith: And what about physical exercise?

Mr. Connor: Regular physical activity is very important. You should have at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week. Exercise helps improve the health of your heart and decrease your body weight. For instance, running and fast walking reduce cholesterol levels and help burn calories.

Mrs. Smith: I ride my bike every day.

Mr. Connor: Good. Don’t forget that if you want to be healthy, you must eliminate nicotine, caffeine and alcohol. Consuming alcohol and tobacco products greatly increases your risk of getting certain cancers, diabetes and heart disease, and can damage your overall health. Unhealthy food, lack of exercise, a sedentary lifestyle and a lot of other factors may become fatal both to your body and your mind.
